The National Library will offer family reading to mark International Literacy Day

September 8, 2014, 06:00

At 11:00 a.m. on September 8, the National Library in Bishkek will transform its resource center into a family reading corner and will host the popular "Stars of Reading to Children" program.

Representatives of UNICEF, Ministry of Culture, Information and Tourism, the Ministry of Education and Science, as well as representatives From the Arts and Culture department of the Swiss Embassy in Kyrgyzstan will attend the opening ceremony.

Following the "Stars Reading to Children" format, children will have the opportunity to listen to well-known people from the Kyrgyz Republic read their favorite books as well as participate in theatrical and entertainment programs.

This year's celebration of International Literacy Day coincides with the 25th anniversary of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and the 20th anniversary of its ratification in Kyrgyzstan. The UN Convention affirms the right of every child in the world to information and education.

As a reminder, the "Roza Otunbayeva Initiative" International Public Foundation initiated the "Stars Reading to Children" program in May 2013 to promote the revival reading and children's interest in books. Today's children read little, which can adversely affect their personal development and limit the full expression of their creative potentials.

The program calls society’s attention to the necessity of reading aloud to children as an indispensable means to instill a love of reading, and is designed to help parents, teachers and librarians revive children’s love for books in order to assist their moral and cognitive developmental and broaden their imaginative horizons.
